Looking for the best horror games? Longstanding series such as Resident Evil and Dead Space remain popular, with some of these games even receiving modern makeovers to entice new and old fans alike. If you generally enjoy any tale of the unknown, of monsters beyond our imagining, video games are a great medium to let you experience it in ways no other medium can.

Like Until Dawn and Man of Medan, House of Ashes is a choice-based survival horror that sees you trying to keep the main characters alive which isn’t as easy as it sounds. The game centers around Special Forces in the Iraq War who stumble across a buried Sumerian temple that houses some unsavory, vampire-like creatures. While it’s perhaps less frightening than Until Dawn and Man of Medan – though the creatures themselves are extremely unsettling – its characters look better and feel more fleshed out than in Supermassive’s other titles.

You may have to forgive some technical issues, however. As Marianne you travel to an abandoned hotel, looking to find the answers behind visions of a dead girl. What follows is a story with plenty of twists and unsettling characters, bolstered by an atmospheric score that work together to form a classic and clever horror game. The Medium is not a long game, clocking up around 11 hours of play, but this game packs a lot of good stuff — its performances are solid, and the gameplay mechanic of switching worlds makes for an interesting gameplay experience and has earned it its place on our best Xbox Series X games list.

Platforms: PS4. We’ve all watched a teen slasher movie at some point it’s hard to escape them but it’s a genre that’s surprisingly uncommon in the gaming world. Probably because it’d be so hard to get it right.

Fortunately, Supermassive Games’ Until Dawn is a game that succeeds in combining slasher movie tropes with the video game format. This PS4 exclusive game follows a group of teenagers going on a trip to a remote cabin in the mountains where, shockingly, there’s a frightening presence interested in picking them off one by one.

It’s up to you to make decisions for the characters in the game which means whether or not they live or die is entirely down to you. Make the wrong decision and your favorite could meet a very grizzly end. Until Dawn is a great horror game because, although it’ll genuinely scare you, you get a sense it’s having a lot of fun doing it.

Little Nightmares is a great example of a game that manages to inspire fear and disgust without using traditional blood and gore. The game puts you in control of a young girl called Six and has you navigate a frightening world that’s far too big for her, populated by a wide array of giant and grotesque creatures.

You don’t have to fight these creatures, you just have to sneak around world and hide to get past them in what is absolutely a platforming puzzle game. But Little Nightmares is a great horror game in that it perfectly creates a feeling of helplessness while making it clear that you’re capable of escaping. It takes familiar and domestic areas of the home that should be comforting and turns them on their head by making them repulsive and unsafe.

If you like this one, make sure to check out the sequel below. Joining Little Nightmares on our list of the best horror games, the sequel Little Nightmares 2 is another unique and atmospheric game which actually improves on many aspects of the original. In Little Nightmares 2 you play as a little boy named Mono, who joins forces with Six, the protagonist of the original game, to survive the terrifying Pale City. Like the original, this is a puzzle platformer that inspires fear and gets your heart racing in new and creative ways and its disturbing visuals and creepy atmosphere are likely to stay with you long after you put the controller down.

The Evil Within series comes from the mind behind Resident Evil, Shinji Mikami — and if that doesn’t give you reason enough to pick it up, we’re not sure what will. This is a third-person survival horror that’ll pull you into a nightmarish world populated by grotesque and frightening enemies. A sequel, The Evil Within 2, screamed onto shelves in in time for Halloween, with lead Sebastian Castanellos once again taking on dark powers beyond his understanding in the warped reality of STEM.

In some ways, it’s regular horror fare: a seemingly idyllic town, dark supernatural forces, and a lost little girl to up the ante. But the way it blends classic horror stalking with more modern action elements — with a real sense of powerlessness to fuel the ongoing terror — makes this a must-play for fans of the genre.

Dead By Daylight stands out in this list by being a horror multiplayer experience: one where a single player takes on the role of a savage serial killer while four others flee for their lives.

It’s a thrilling twist on usual PvP combat, with a host of original characters each with their own advantages in play as either a Survivor or Killer. There are plenty of tricks and strategies to execute in each map, with a character progression system that should keep you coming back. For those who can tolerate the single note that plays throughout, Condemned is a rare thing though – a horror game in which the combat emphasises the terror rather than diminishing it.

Boasting some of the best lighting in a top-down 2d game you’re ever likely to see, Darkwood makes the shadowy corners of a room, or the spaces between trees, absolutely terrifying. Things skitter into view, go bump in the night and then latch onto your face or leg, and chew right down to the bone. It’s a narrative game and a surreal nightmare that borrows from RPGs , roguelikes and survival games but feels distinct from any particular genre.

Really, deep down, it’s a pure horror game, with all of its design focused on unnerving and startling its players. It’s also in the rare group that might make you recoil from the screen but also has enough quiet dread to creep back into your mind late at night when you’re far from the screen in a far more insidious fashion.

The House Abandon alone might have been enough for developers No Code to earn a place on this list. Originally released for free, it’s a superb spin on parser-based interactive fiction, putting the player in the shoes of somebody playing a game which is maybe about somebody playing the same game. It plays with perception, expectation and interaction in ways that made us smile as much as they made us shudder.

It’s scary, but it’s also delightfully clever. But there’s much more than The House Abandon here. It’s the love of old-fashioned interfaces that make up so much of Alien’s retro-future that you’ll see in the other tales that make up Stories Untold. Each has its own mode of interaction and loosely fits into its own sub-genre of horror.

Consistently surprising, genuinely unnerving, and wholly unique, this marks No Code out as one of the most exciting young studios in the world. Has a game ever recreated the look and feel of a film as accurately as Alien: Isolation? Everything from the creature itself to the individual posters and pieces of machinery that fill the Sevastopol has been crafted to fit with the design principles that made the Nostromo such a fascinating and enduring location.

This is a vision of a future populated by ordinary people — working Joes, you could call them — who just so happen to make their living as part of the crew of gargantuan spacefaring vessels and stations. Within that world, Isolation is a story about a horrific alien that seems to be made of knives, acid and a phallus tearing through the population of a science fiction facility.

It is also the story of a woman who has lost her mother, searching for answers. That it manages to tell all of those intertwined tales while also delivering one of the most tense and terrifying system-driven games of this or any other year is a remarkable achievement.

Isolation is an unforgiving game. Unfair even. The alien will kill you, again and again and again. Soma styled as SOMA was the difficult second album for Frictional after the hype of Amnesia, and it turned out to be another an enduringly fabulous horror game. Though it’s also a sci-fi game , using futuristic tech, and an AI with a very rigid interpretation of what it might mean for humanity to ‘survive’, to explore the idea of self, the conclusions it comes to and the ideas that it makes you examine are frightening.

They are enduringly scary. They are scary in a way that will keep you up at night weeks after you play it. Stuck in an undersea science facility, decades after everyone you knew and loved has already died, you find it haunted by fusions of man and machine that are as sorrowful as they are frightening. They whisper snatches of half-remembered thoughts to themselves, or else are unaware that they’re a human mind trapped in an automaton – they see their metal hands as flesh and blood.

And in this context, the walls seem alive too. They seep water and black good. The metal doors and hallways feel like they’re watching you – after all, haven’t you seen metal screaming?

And most horrifying of all is the gradual revelation of what has become of humanity – both the species as a whole, and yourself. The less said the better when it comes to Kitty Horrowshow’s masterpiece, which uses elements of found footage and lo-fi visuals to create the only piece of horror fiction that has ever made me want to leave my own home and sleep in a hotel for the night.

It’s short, though it has only just begun after the first playthrough, and I challenge anyone to play it in the dark, wearing headphones, alone. There are no sudden frights but if you’re amenable to its particular sense of dread, Anatomy will actually steal sleep from you. Pathologic is unique.

It almost seems reductive to describe it as a horror game, but if not horror then what? Set in a diseased town whose districts and major buildings are named after parts of a human body or biological functions and extractions, Pathologic doesn’t place the player character at the centre of things. You can move toward the centre of things, in an attempt to keep yourself alive or to discover the city’s secrets, but the game never panders to you.

The story of the city’s death takes place over twelve days and can be experienced from three different perspectives. Brilliantly constructed, the setting and story are among the most literate and intelligent in gaming, and that they can be experienced piecemeal is testament to Ice-Pick Lodge’s ability to exercise the unique qualities of the medium.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Pathologic advanced interactive storytelling in ways that few games ever have. Or at least it would have done if anyone had been paying attention, or had been able to emulate its finer qualities. System Shock 2 is one of the best games ever made , whatever the chosen category might be. Few games, whether set in the depths of dungeons or the depths of space, have captured the claustrophobia that comes from existing in a space surrounded and infiltrated by death.

You’re never allowed to forget that a skin of metal separates you from extinction and that the interior spaces that the universe is pressing against from the outside are filled with corrupted and corrupting organisms. That sense of dread and doom makes Irrational’s masterpiece one of the greatest horror games and, as a sci-fi horror RPG, it is unique.

Shock 2 is a first-person survival horror game, but it’s the use of RPG mechanics such as inventory management and character development that allow it to retain its power on repeated visits.

There is no other RPG so tightly designed, so terrifying and yet so open to experimental play. The cyborg midwives, as their name suggests, are the most horrifying creatures in any game.

Even monkeys have become agents of fear within the coffin-ships of Shock 2. Oh, and there are spiders. Of course there are spiders. It’s the freedom that you’re given to approach those enemies that makes them truly horrifying, though. That the game gives you so much agency allows you to feel like the agent of your own destruction, and that you are never railroaded makes it easier to believe that the things that lurk in the dark have as much freedom as you do.

Let’s be clear – Call Of Pripyat could sit in the top spot on many lists, but this is as much its rightful home as any other. The S. And those terrible things are far more terrible than the inhabitants of a haunted house or a derelict spaceship. Everything flows naturally from the world.

If you need something, you find it within its place and if you are required to do something then you consider, observe and approach. This is a world that is dying and yet in which you can live, for a few hours at a time, building relationships not only with the people but with specific places and features.

It is a real place made fiction, as much by the historical events that shape the games’ mythology as by the games themselves. At their most harrowing, the creatures of Pripyat are the final barrier that stands between you and an understanding of the world.

Quiet on the contrary! Many horror game enthusiasts will find something for themselves in this game. The empty corridors of the spaceship Amanda give goosebumps on their own.

Now imagine Xenomorph following the protagonist step by step. The franchise is known for subtle yet terrifying build-up that makes you scared without noticing it.

Instead, you will be able to discover a gripping story, several unsettling locations, and solve numerous puzzles involving physics. Dead by Daylight is a game from that continuously enjoys unfading popularity. How is this possible? All thanks to asymmetric multiplayer, in which some gamers play the role of mortals that are chased by a murderer with supernatural abilities. This mechanic provides highly addictive and exciting gameplay. It is worth mentioning that, despite some time passing, the game developers still care about their creation, regularly introducing new killers and fixing bugs.

Best survival horror games don’t have to be made in full 3D to be truly realistic and immersive. Simple titles with a bird’s eye view are equally effective, and the best example is Darkwood. The Polish studio Acid Wizard offered players a demanding and non-linear game conducted in a procedurally generated world.

The entertaining gameplay is divided into two stages. During the day, you should explore the surroundings in search of resources. But at night The fans of the movies probably waited for this game the most — although we can’t say it’s not a fun ride for those unfamiliar with the films.

Ash Williams and his friends have to face the Kandarian Demon — or, should we say, escape from it as soon as possible. This action-adventure title gives off Left 4 Dead vibes, adding new mechanics to the mix. If not space, then the ocean’s depths are a perfect setting for horror.

Instead of the standard game about zombies or other monsters, the developers chose slightly different boogeymen. The primary opponents are robots guided by artificial intelligence, underwater creatures, and mad scientists, or instead, what is left of them.

One can only run or hide from danger. Our main protagonist is utterly defenseless against it. The Evil Within 2 continues the well-received survival horror from The game’s main character is a detective looking for his missing daughter. The tracks lead him to the town of Union. A quiet little town has become a place for evoking an alternative reality full of dangers.

This survival horror guarantees plenty of freedom to eliminate enemies, although the best solution is usually to run away. Contrary to what the original offered, The Evil Within 2 features open locations filled with side quests.

Released in , exclusively for Nintendo Wii U, the title finally got a full port for numerous platforms, including PC. Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water tells a story about the three heroes whose fates accidentally intertwine.

Their only “weapon” is the apparatus used to exorcise the spirits the heroes meet on their way. Players received this installment of the iconic series well, although the port could use better controls — don’t worry, though, it’s nothing that a patch can’t fix. The zombie games from the Resident Evil series are true classics of the genre.

They managed to reflect the atmosphere of the originals while introducing many mechanical improvements at the same time.

No wonder there are rumors about Resident Evil 4 Remake coming to the market. However, we still have to wait for it to get released.

The more courageous players should reach for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The return to the roots of the series turned out to be a bull’s eye. Exploring an old mansion in a remote area while being practically unarmed evokes a flood of emotions.

Resident Evil Village , which is set in a forgotten Romanian village, is a bit more accessible for a mass consumer. Unfortunately, starting the game with the newest part is not an option because the story told in Village is a direct continuation of the events from the previous installment. Therefore, we recommend at least reading the plot summary before meeting the Dimitrescu family.

The Dark Pictures Anthology is a trilogy that currently includes three games. These cinematic adventure games maintain a horror atmosphere and can be played independently from each other because the events in each part are not related in any way.

Man of Medan is the first title of the trilogy and tells the story that unravels on an old, seemingly haunted US ship from the Second World War.

The most notable change is its larger scale, challenging you to explore its terrifying semi-open-world environments fraught with danger at every turn. You can absolutely see the lineage of System Shock in those games, except none of them were anywhere near as frightening. System Shock 2 is an old-school gaming experience that will test your mettle with very little handholding, deep RPG mechanics, and survival horror elements that make every combat encounter tense.

The first-person, stealth-heavy gameplay experience marked a big change from the third-person blueprint laid out by Resident Evil, and it fast became adopted by dozens of Outlast clones thereafter. In many ways, Silent Hill 2 follows a similar design philosophy to the original Resident Evil trilogy, with its third-person perspective, puzzle-heavy gameplay, and use of lighting and SFX to create a tense ambiance. But here the psychological horror elements are at the forefront, rather than pure monster-slaying action.

Players are tasked with exploring the inside of a spooky and mysterious Victorian-era mansion owned by a mad artist. The environment is the real ghoul of the game, shifting and changing in terrifying ways as you delve deeper into uncovering its disturbing secrets.

Players may find themselves in a hallway that seems to stretch on forever, only to turn back and find that the door they entered through is mere steps away.
