MS copped out on producing documentation for all Office applications long ago. What you are looking for was known as a “User Guide”. If it is not the last one, it is one of the last versions. Since MS abdicated it’s responsibility to document it’s programs it has depended on external experts to write the user guides. Go to any large bookstore and you’ll see a dozen or more titles for Word alone.

From relatively short “idiot” level books like the “For Dummies Spend some time browsing in a book store and pick one or two. Designed to help you practice and prepare for the Word Microsoft Office Specialist MOS exam, this all-in-one study guide features: Full, objective-by-objective exam coverage; Easy-to-follow procedures and illustrations to review essential skills; Hands-on practice tasks to apply what you’ve learned; files included; Online pre-test to assess your readiness.

Use the in-depth exam prep, practice, and review to help advance your proficiency with Microsoft Office – and earn the credential that proves it! There are a couple of simple realities to consider when buying “User Guides” for Office programs. First, programs like Word, Excel and PowerPoint are incredibly complex. Years ago I saw articles documenting that these programs have each have over commands!

The combinations and permutations and nuances of these commands simply incredible. Frankly, MS does not have the imagination to get the most out of their own programs. When you read what people have been able to do, the subtleties they have created you’ll be amazed. Second, change in these programs is very slow “evolutionary” rather than “revolutionary”.

Some new commands are “bolted on” with each release, and sometimes a few old ones are retired. Even the switch from the superior menu to the “ribbon” was simply a case of “putting lipstick on the pig”.

They changed the “shell” that accessed the underlying commands, but This means that if you get a good, detailed book for or even or earlier!

Then you just have to look up online articles detailing “what’s new” in each subsequent release. With that info you can lookup detailed online articles about any of the new features that interest you. I’ve been using Word since 91 and every week I still learn something new about it. The online learning portion is especially significant for the version of Office MS finally got serious about releasing new features to starting with There are several quite significant new features as well as many rather trivial, or specialized, ones that are so new that they are ONLY documented online.

These following “roadmaps” are as close to what you are looking for that MS still provides. But they touch on only a tiny portion of the application’s functionality. I hope but I’m not holding my breath that over time MS will expand these documents to cover all functionality Each step in the roadmap is a clickable link to a web page. The Office roadmap takes you through the process of buying a subscription key, installing and managing It also includes leaning steps for some of the extra apps bundled with Skype, OneDrive, Both the consumer and business versions.

These “quick starts” are as good a place as any learning about the applications. They are similar to the roadmaps:. Here are links to a random selection books about Word and Office.

I am of the same opinion, especially when I am dealing withholder and different versions of MS Word and do not know where sometimes changes are coming from and there is no any explanation and help for this.

Sorry to say, disappointment it is. MS does not have a clear set of online documentation that covers all of the features of ANY of their current applications. They do have a lot of disjointed introductory material and some more advanced stuff also. And that is massively short of being comprehensive.

Some time not too long after that, I think one or two major releases at most they stopped doing paper documentation that shipped with the installation disks. Here are some online resources for learning Word. When you search for FREE learning materials, don’t be shy about getting materials for older versions. Change is additive, cumulative. New features added, very little removed.

You can even go back to menu versions. The basic functionality and concepts documented in the menu based versions still applies in the current ribbonized versions. All MS did was paste the Ribbon on top of the old menu commands and functions. This book does not disappoint. While I am an Office veteran, my company updated to the newest version of Office and I needed to get up to speed on the changes, updates and new features of this version of Office. We previously used at work and I had at home.

I wasn’t wild about the version. I wanted a solid guide to give me the scoop so that I could help my co-workers with learning and using the version. The authors give you an overview of Office , what’s new and give a thorough explanation of where and how to use commands with a dash of humor and fun. Most people don’t take the time to learn how to use computers, software or even their phones. I see them struggle with basic tasks because they won’t spend a bit of time to learn how things work.

You need good, solid information to help you master computer skills. This book will help. The authors explain things in plain English without a great deal of technical terms. If you prefer the more technical guides, the Microsoft Inside Out and Wileys Bible series will cover in more technical detail.

The Missing Manuals are great consumer guides. All programs are covered, including OneNote, Publisher and Access. I’ve been able to assist with end user tech support for the Office version with few problems. I highly recommend this book whether you have the new version or are interested in it. Knowledge of how to use this software will keep you a head of the game at work, school or job hunting.

Employers love people with solid computer skills. Get this book and keep yourself ahead of the pack! This is no exception! There’s more here that covers all the programs in the Office suite than most program specific manuals by other people. Like every other of the Missing Manual books, the writing is plan language that covers topics in a way that is clear and understandable. Everyone from less experienced users to the folks who need more of a quick reference guide, these books are written to make things understandable to the newer users without causing more experienced users to yawn while talking to the experienced folks without glazing the eyeballs of the less experienced folk.

In my case I use some of the Office Suite programs much more than others, but I do use them all. That’s what’s so great about this book- so far everything I needed to know is there and it’s easy to find. It’s hard to describe how well the Office suite as a whole is covered in this one book! As I go along I will be getting Missing Manual books for Access and Excel individually to get a fuller, more advanced understanding of those programs. As a long-time Office user, I bypassed the upgrade to Office , and just upgraded to Office in April I expected a decently detailed explanation of the new features not available in previous renditions of Office.

Finally, it would have been nice to have a decent discussion of the new or revised functions that have been added. DIST with options to calculate either the cumulative distribution function or the probability density function.

I purchased this manual based on the great reviews it received from others and the author’s qualifications. It is incredibly detailed.

Every step including those that other manuals leave out are included here in very easy to follow language. If there are 6 steps to get from beginning to end, they are all listed. No leaving the reader to hit dead ends. I so appreciate that other purchasers took the time to let the Amazon community know how good this manual is. It really is the only manual you will ever need for Office One person found this helpful.

I’ve become a fan of this “Missing Manual” series of books. They are written in plain English for those of us who are not computer geeks. This book and the Missing Manual for Windows 7 are getting me through the change over to a new computer and updated software. In the future, these will be the books I choose when I need assistance with the computer.

Great series! I have recommended them to friends. This manual for Office was beyond my expectations in condition and content. It was shipped in “like new” condition in protective packaging. It covers each program in the Office group, but introduces users to common features among the different programs before going to individual programs.

New users get a thorough introduction to each program, and previous users are quickly brought up-to-date on new features in this issue. The size of the manual is formidable in size and weight, which may tend to put off some users, but it will reward those who really put it to use. OK for people who know nothing about Office, a great paperweight for anyone looking for in-depth help.

I’ve used and loved other missing manuals, so I was very disappointed when this one left me high and dry. The publisher sacrificed depth for the sake of breadth, since this book purports to help with the entire MS Office suite.

Yes, the programs are integrated now, but if you need help with a specific program like Word, Access or Excel, get a different book. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Fortunately there are email contacts that I might need to contact if all else fails but, so far, it’s proved hopelessly inadequate in a very basic sense. I only have need for the Word, Excel and Outlook sections – I don’t have the other programmes – but am quite happy to buy a comprehensive volume if it will do what I want it to.

However, having graduated from Office to this one, I’m in real trouble with trying to make perform tasks and am not helped in my searches by a totally inadequate index. With what I have achieved, I seem to need two or three clicks where one used to suffice but, whilst I haven’t spent hours poring over it, so far I’ve failed to find out how to alter my default settings, how to transfer pics from emails to files or, indeed, transfer pics from one file to another.

Overlaying one text box on to another, e. In a book that size, I’m prepared to accept that the info MAY be there but finding it without an index has so far proved impossible.

Report abuse. This is a very good book, with useful information and easy to read. I’d certainly recommend it. Pros: – Well laid out with an easy to follow style. Easy to understand with real world examples.
