Adobe’s photo-processing software now handles offline images better and streamlines some other operations. I’ve been writing about and reviewing consumer technology since before the turn of the century.

And if, like me, you want to strip out the audio track, the new option to balance the audio between an attached music file or audio track is a welcome if kludgy solution. If you look at their SDK you will soon find out that its not that open to you as a 3rd party developer That’s a fair point about Adobe working hard at decoding the various proprietary formats. Of course, Adobe is paid well for their trouble. As for universal adoption of DNG, Adobe’s cloud debacle has probably shifted the proprietary vs. The sheer arrogance of Adobe’s management is astounding. Hopefully when this all blows up the Adobe board of directors will finally start doing their job and clean house.

Look at Pentax. Shoot in PEF, get lots of features. Shoot in DNG, sht like focus distance is missing. I just tested this on LR5 and it worked fine. I also compared it to LR4 and the results are the same. Overall LR5 feels more like LR4 2. It is faster changing modules, and the healing brush is better. These LR4 fixes will help speed up my workflow, but I am not thrilled having to pay for what seems like LR4 patches.

Bug has been confirmed by Adobe. I find it hard to imagine how these features could be implemented in a non destructive workflow programme like LR.

These and many of the other features people are claiming are ‘missing’ from LR are what Photoshop or PS Elements is for. That will never be added to an RAW editor. Like a Judas, I crossed the picket line and bought the upgrade. You’ll all be pleased to know that it won’t download using IE Adobe customer service response, ‘you will have to install Firefox’. I can’t keep up! I need to totally ditch this company. I don’t use half of what this program has to offer.

I just get the idea that Adobe’s trying to squeeze more money out of me. I’m sick of paying for this program over and over again! Yes – companies that release software and never improve it or add to it are much better than companies that continually offer new features.

If recent experience is anything to go by this will probably their last non-cloud version. Rather than looking at LR I will be looking at the latest offerings from Phase One, or something else outside the Adobe Orwellian future. Ok, it was a big expenditure, but now you’re ready to see those great new images, right?

But wait; there’s one more thing to buy because your perfectly usable version of Lightroom no longer works because you bought a new camera. Heck, most of us were on a 2 year upgrade with DSLR’s.

That said, it’s the middle of wedding season and I’m not downloading new software with bugs on launch. I’ll wait ’til 5. I thought Adobe was the echelon of software. How do they have big bugs on launch? It’s not LR 1. It’s LR5! Add some freeware like Paint. NET for a wide open source of filters and effects, and you can forget all the trouble with prices, policies, clouds etc.

And people used to all-in-one suite should, IMO, seriously consider Corel. Doesn’t seem that much relative to the amount invested in lenses, cameras, computer I sure not going to try to do the same things as it does with a bunch of freeware and half-baked programs. Been there done that. But like a previous poster said, last time he checked LR 4 still works. I’m sorry have you not been reading the bug reports.

Paying for the program is buying a half-baked program. My disgust with Adobe pales in comparison to my disgust with the US government. But they do have a lot in common. In the US the government provides all sorts of services like highways, paid for by taxes, but these highways don’t stop working for you based on some fee you didn’t pay last month, so that’s very very unlike Adobe.

So on the whole not, even if both parties behaviors are disgusting, they’re not behaving in similarly disgusting ways. Have you ever installed an app like little snitch? Then you would know that Adobe’s software constantly calls home to many of their IP adresses for NO need. Once in while I ask it to check for updates. The big reason I’m certain is that I use dial up, but then there’s my firewall and the fact that I’ve turned off a lot small Adobe background programs.

Cipher: I switched to Capture One Use whatever software comes with the camera. This will most likely produce a. At least the folks who make cameras feel obligated to provide a way to open the images produced by the camera. Rendering is obviously better and I have to do less adjustments to get what I want.

But still feels like going backwards compared to Photoshop. It’s like they have to re-invent everything even though they have done it all once before.

I could bitch and moan about the prices for a few months and lose the productivity benefits yes the improvements are real , or just get over it. I think my time is worth that, yours may not. So hang on for a few months and then upgrade. But be ready to bitch and moan about the LR6 upgrade price once sooner rather than later.

I take it you know Nik are no longer developing this program for Nikon since Google has taken Nik over which leaves the future development of the program up in the air at present. Because CaptureNX Nikon add the new cameras but they do not design the upgrades to the program, ie when new versions come out. Those were designed by Nik. Nik have already stated since being bought out by Google that they will no longer be developing the program for Nikon.

Nikon is no longer one of Nik’s clients. That means Nikon will have to get software designers in or find a new company to develop the software on their behalf. Nik was no longer developing Capture NX anyway. Stu I’m hoping Google has something remarkable in the works. Anything to be free from Adobe. Nikon had virtually nothing to do with it except for buying it.

I’ve tested the Beta It offers significant new features if you’re on an older version of LR. Not everybody is running LR4. The spot correction and “upright” tools are worth the upgrade price alone for me.

Those are the remaining functions I go to Photoshop most often for. I agree that the spot correction tool is a great addition. Also the more flexible vignette tool. But I’m going to wait to upgrade I just bought LR4. The Upright tool has already saved me a lot of time. Single click gets it right more often than not. When it doesn’t work I fall back to the ViewPoint plugin. Much more flexibility than the old spot method.

The radial gradient provides a fast and efficient way to draw the attention in an otherwise flat photo. Much easier than brushing. Personally, I find dialing in perspective correction using LR4 works faster than using Viewpoint and “Upright”, while automatic, rarely gets things exactly the way I want them.

For removing spots or anything else I don’t think anything can beat content-aware fill in Photoshop. An extra step but worth it, IMO. Its quite interesting that Phase One has just launched a discount campaign for their Capture One software.
